Nature Enrichment After School

Natural Science Enrichment After School: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3:15-5:30 Wild Bear’s after school enrichment combines hands-on natural science with the arts. Enjoy outdoor studies at Mud Lake, at Wild Bear and in and around the nature center. Ride the bus from Nederland Elementary School to Wild Bear after School. Meet at Wild Bear and go from there! Read the following descriptions for details.

Natural Science Enrichment after school:
• Tuesdays, Wednesday, Thursdays 3:15–5:30 (starting 8/22/17)
• Your 5-12 year old takes the school bus from NES to Wild Bear
• $20 per child in advance/$25 day of
• $15/day if sign up for 20 or more workshops

Primitive Skills, Nov 7, 8, 9- Discover the deep connection and respect our ancestors had with the Earth.  Shelter, fire, water, and food are necessary for all living things.  Learn how far we have come from the way we once lived.

Prehistoric Pottery, Nov 14, 15, 16 Explore the timeless art of creating pottery from ancient forms passed on to modern day techniques.  Try your hand at your own clay creations!  Discover the Native culture of Colorado.

Winter Birds, Nov 28, 29, 30 Who flies there?  Meet our feathered friends who remain during the winter snow.

Hot and Cold Science, Dec 5, 6, 7 Explore weather with cool experiments that will bring out the scientist in you and help develop a better understanding of our earth.

Herbal Crafts, Dec 12, 13, 14 As the season changes, let’s find the plants in nature that can help comfort us!  Create soothing crafts such as herbal eye pillows, bath salts and rice healing socks!

Winter Solstice,  Dec 19, 20, 21  Winter Solstice is the time to celebrate the coming of the light!  As we approach the darkest day of the year, make candles and make a wish for good tidings in the coming year.

Snow Science, Jan 9, 10, and 11 Crystals, Ice, and snow!  Explore our winter wonderland through snow science and ice and snow creative arts!

Moon Cycles, Stars, and the Night Sky, Jan 16, 17, and 18 Let’s get up close to those distant stars that bedazzle the night sky.  Create your own constellation and learn some mysteries of the night sky.

Food Science Jan 23, 24, and 25 Do you like to cook?  Explore with us the world of chemistry in our food as we mix, stir, blend, and cook our way to deliciousness with the things we like to eat everyday!

Recycled Art, Jan 30, 31, and Feb 1 Get your creative juices flowing and use your imagination to create amazing pieces of art with what others might view as trash.

Animal Art, Feb 6, 7, and 8 Have you ever looked closely at animal patterns? Whiskers, stripes and the veins of an animal?  Create a masterpiece as you mold, shape, create, or brush stroke your animal inspired art piece.

Landscape Art, Feb 13, 14, and 15 Be inspired by the panorama of the natural world around! Mold, shape, create, or brush stroke your landscape inspired art piece.

Worms & other Decomposers, Feb 27, 28, and March 1 Dig into the underworld to discover those busy creatures that feed the earth with what was once alive.

Fossils, Rocks & Dinos, March 6, 7, and 8 Dig into the underworld to discover those mineralized creatures that once roamed to earth.

Wild Wind Crafts, March 13, 14, and 15  We can give some respect to our wild Nederland winds and create art pieces that dance and twirl in the air around us.  Test your skills with air science experiments.

Spring into Spring! March 20, 21, and 22 Time to dust off the snow, take in the sunshine, and get ready to emerge into springtime.  Observe and discover the signs of spring happening around us.

All about Eggs, April 3, 4, and 5 Did you come from an egg?  We will discover what animals come from an egg as we explore life cycles of all these unique creatures and what makes them special egg-laying creatures.

Natural Dyes, April 10, 11, and 12 Blueberries, beets, onion peels, and turmeric.  Using organic materials we will create dyes to embellish our fabrics.

Help the Earth D.O.T, April 17, 18, and 19 It’s amazing that this is the only planet in the universe with LIFE on it!  We must protect it and encourage others to do the same!  Celebrate Earth Day every day! 

Hummingbirds & Other Migrators, April 24, 25, and 26 Get ready to welcome back the birds who left for the winter! !  Spring is in the air, look up and see who’s coming back for a visit.  Let’s learn about these amazing creatures who visit us every year.

Indoor Gardening, May 1, 2, and 3 We will explore what we can grow under our grow lights indoors. Flowers, veggies, and fruit; let’s plant some seeds that will be ready for transplanting in the outdoors.

Metamorphosis, May 8, 9, and 10 Metamorphosis means Change.  Let’s discover the metamorphosis of Amphibians and Insects! Learn the difference between incomplete and complete metamorphosis and get a closer look at the animals that rely on this process to reach adulthood.

Mud Lake Excursions, May 15, 16, and 17 Celebrate Spring at Mud Lake!  Hike, explore the water, smell the air to welcome changes at Mud Lake.

End of the Year Celebration, May 22, 23, and 24 Time to wrap it up!  It’s time to take home garden projects and get ready for summer. Let’s celebrate!
